What They Said
Resident & Family Voices
Lam Chiu-Wah
Daughter of resident, Sha Tin
"My mother has been at Hoi Yan for eight months now and the change in her has been noticeable. She was quite withdrawn after my father passed β she barely went out. The mahjong group drew her in gradually, and she now mentions the other ladies in conversation regularly. The staff knew her name within the first week, which meant more than I expected it to."

Wong Fong-Yi
Resident, Residence & Lifestyle Plan
"I moved here because my flat was becoming harder to manage alone. I was hesitant β I did not want to feel like I had been placed somewhere. But it genuinely does not feel that way. The room is mine, the meals are good, and I join the calligraphy session whenever the mood takes me. Nobody pushes. That matters at my age."

Chan Kwai-Ling
Son of resident, Tai Po
"The pricing transparency was one of the first things I noticed when we were comparing options. No hidden costs, no tiered extras that turned a manageable sum into something else. The team was patient with our questions, and they answered honestly β including once when they acknowledged that Hoi Yan might not be the right fit if we needed medical supervision."

Ho Mei-Lin
Resident, Cultural Studio Plan
"The Cantonese opera sessions have been something I look forward to each week. I learned the forms years ago as a child, and hearing those recordings with others who remember them the same way is quite moving. The coordinator clearly put thought into the choices. I would join for that alone."

Tsang Yuk-Har
Granddaughter of resident, Kowloon
"My grandmother is in her eighties and fairly independent, but she was lonely after the pandemic. The Companion Circles plan was a good starting point β she didn't have to commit to living there, just attend sessions. After a few months she decided she wanted to move in full time. I haven't seen her this social in years."

Leung Po-Kwan
Son and primary contact, Sha Tin
"They called me when my father had a minor health scare β not an emergency, but something worth noting. They had already spoken with him, given him some water and made sure he was comfortable, and then called me straightforwardly to say what had happened and what they had done. That kind of calm communication is exactly what a family member needs."

Case Studies
Three Journeys at Hoi Yan
Mrs. Yuen, 79, had been living alone in Sha Tin following her husband's passing three years earlier. Her children visited regularly but noticed she was spending long stretches of the day without leaving her flat. She was eating irregularly and had become reluctant to socialise.
Her daughter enquired about Companion Circles as a low-commitment starting point. Mrs. Yuen attended twice a week, joining the card games group. After six weeks she asked about the calligraphy sessions in the Cultural Studio. Three months later, she moved onto the full Residence and Lifestyle Plan.
Mrs. Yuen now shares meals daily, attends three to four sessions each week and has formed a close friendship with two other long-term residents. Her daughter describes the change as significant. "She has things she looks forward to now."
Mr. Ng, 83, was a retired schoolteacher who had maintained an active social life for years. Following a period of poor health, he became less mobile and found it harder to attend his usual gatherings. His family were concerned about both his physical isolation and his loss of creative engagement.
The family contacted Hoi Yan primarily for the Cultural Studio. Mr. Ng visited on a trial basis and sat in on the calligraphy and opera sessions. He joined the full Residence Plan after two visits, and his family arranged for his preferred reference books and writing materials to be moved to his room.
Mr. Ng has been at Hoi Yan for fourteen months. He runs an informal calligraphy exchange with two other residents on days when no session is scheduled. His son notes that his energy and appetite have both improved. "He has purpose again."
